Old Forester will make new rye whiskey for the first time in 150 years

Rye lovers, rejoice! 

Old Forester, the Louisville-based bourbon distiller, will introduce a new Kentucky straight rye whiskey, its first grain recipe in nearly 150 years. 

What's the difference between rye and bourbon whiskey? Glad you asked. 

American rye whiskey must be distilled from at least 51 percent rye grains – it leads to a spicier and more floral taste in the spirit. Whereas bourbon must, legally, be made of at least 51 percent corn.

Old Forester is closing in on a market trend: Rye is on the rise. 

Supplier revenue generated from rye whiskey has increased from over $15 million in 2009 to almost $160 million in 2016, according to thedrinksbusiness.com. 

“Our signature bourbon recipe has done this brand proud through Prohibition, World Wars and changing consumer palates,” Campbell Brown, Old Forester president, said in a statement. “This January we will create a new tradition with a Kentucky straight rye that will capture the hearts and excite the palates of experienced rye drinkers and curious whisky enthusiasts alike.”

The Old Forester rye was crafted by Master Distiller Chris Morris and Master Taster Jackie Zykan, according to a news release. The mash bill consists of 65 percent rye, 20 percent malted barley and 15 percent corn. It's 100 proof. 

Old Forester 100 Proof Rye will be offered nationwide at a suggested retail price of $22.99 starting Feb. 1.
