Two Brooklyn attorneys busted for trying to lob a Molotov cocktail through a police car window during a heated protest over the death of George Floyd also wanted other protesters to firebomb the cops, federal authorities said Monday.
Colinford Mattis, a corporate lawyer and Brooklyn community board member, drove his tan mini-van through a clash between protesters and cops at the 88th Precinct stationhouse in Fort Greene early Saturday as his alleged accomplice, Urooj Rahman, also a lawyer, prepared to fling the incendiary device, federal prosecutors said in a detention memo.
Mattis, 32, and Rahman, 31, had materials to make more Molotov cocktails in their vehicle, police said, and according to a witness who snapped a picture of Rahman with her homemade Bud Light bottle firebomb, they were urging other protesters to also use them.
“Rahman attempted to distribute Molotov cocktails to the witness and others so that those individuals could likewise use the incendiary devices in furtherance of more destruction and violence,” the witness later told authorities.
When Mattis drove near a police car in Fort Greene, Rahman exited from the passenger’s side “and then lit and threw an incendiary device consisting of a glass bottle containing an incendiary chemical,” the criminal complaint said. She tossed it into a previously broken window, according to the feds.
The minivan fled the scene, but was stopped a short time later by a patrol car. Officers arrested Rahman and Mattis.
“During the arrest, officers observed in plain view several precursor items used to build a Molotov cocktail, including a lighter, a Bud Light beer bottle filled with toilet paper and a liquid suspected to be gasoline in the vicinity of the passenger seat and a gasoline tank in the rear of the vehicle,” the complaint said.
Mattis, a Princeton University grad and alumnus of NYU’s School of law, and Rahman, a registered attorney admitted to the N.Y. bar in June 2019, were both charged with the attempted attack on an empty police cruiser parked outside the 88th Precinct station.
“Instead of using their privileged positions to change society lawfully, they used a Molotov cocktail and sought to incite others to adopt their violent ways,” the complaint said.
Both were ordered released on $250,000 bail Monday after their arraignments and put on home detention. Federal prosecutors appealed the decision to another judge, but lost the first round, meaning Mattis and Rahman were released to home detention. Federal prosectuors said they will appeal the bond ruling in a higher court.
In arguing for the two to stay in custody, federal prosecutor Ian Richardson said that Rahman tried to encourage other protesters to get violent with cops during the protest over the death of Floyd, a black man, at the hands of a white cop.
“A witness came forward with a photo of the defendant holding a Molotov cocktail in the car she was offering to protesters in an effort to incite further violence against the NYPD,” Richardson said.
“The tensions with police remain high. We don’t believe this is the time to be releasing a bomb-thrower like the defendant into the streets,” Richardson continued.
Rahman’s lawyer, Benjamin Yaster, countered that his client was the caregiver to her aging mother and should be put in home detention.
Her mother, who was on the line, told the court how much Rahman does for her as her daughter quietly cried.
“She does groceries. Everything she does for me,” her mother said. “She is very loving and very caring to everyone in the family.”
Yaster said that even if his client were guilty of the charges, she did not endanger anyone and the case is ultimately about destruction of property.
“As I read in the complaint, it was a parked vehicle that was already damaged that was not being used and there was no one inside,” Yaster said. “While we don’t deny it’s serious, it’s not so serious that Ms. Rahman must be detained.”
Just before the arraignment of the two lawyers, federal prosecutors charged Samantha Shader, 27, for tossing a Molotov cocktail at cops in a similar act of violence during the Brooklyn protest.
Sader had already admitted that she approached a police vehicle near the corner of Eastern Parkway and Washington Ave. Friday and lit a bottle containing an incendiary chemical and smashed the windows of a police car with the firebomb, according to an FBI affidavit.
Shader, who lives in Catskill, N.Y. and has lengthy criminal record, was arrested and charged with attempting to use improvised incendiary devices after the caught-on-camera attack.
“It’s violent in nature,” said Assistant U.S. Attorney Jonathan Algor. “She’s throwing a Molotov cocktail at NYPD officers and with innocent bystanders there’s significant danger to the community. If the defendant were to be released, especially during these times, there’s no assurances that the community would be protected.”
She was held without bail.
